British Values

The Department of Education states that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” At Summerfield School, these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways.

Democracy

Democracy is an essential part to school life. We believe that it is important that pupils are always listened to and taught how to be good listeners whilst respecting the right of every individual. Our School Councillors are elected solely through a campaign speech and student voting. The School Council and Year 5 have enjoyed online workshops learning about how MPs are elected too. Surveys are a regular part of school life for our children for example, class read, transport surveys and free choice activities.

"Making things fair,"  Year 1 pupil.

The Rule of Law

Assemblies are used to reinforce the importance of law within school and the country. We develop understanding further in our PSHE, PE and History lessons. Support from local authorities such as the police and fire service help children to understand the importance of law. Year 5 had the opportunity to make their own law and see the journey you must go on whilst on a UK Parliament Workshop. Our restorative justice approach helps us to resolve conflicts during the day.

“It is good to learn the difference between good and bad in this world,”  Year 4 pupil.

Individual Liberty

At Summerfield, children are encouraged to make choices and decisions whilst understanding that they are in a safe and secure environment. We provide children learning opportunities through PSHE and Computing lessons so that they are empowered to make choices safely. Our strong pastoral system allows children to grow in confidence, knowledge, and esteem to be their very best self.

Mutual Respect

Respect is one of our core values and we believe that everyone is different, unique and valued. We regularly share our own life experiences with the children and give them opportunities to do the same. Our uniqueness is celebrated at Summerfield and our pupils have been taught the power of knowledge and how they can respectfully ask and learn about each other. Celebration assembly on Fridays, provides an opportunity for our pupils to be celebrated whilst also learning to be respectful and good listeners.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Pupils are provided with many learning opportunities to enhance their understanding of different faiths and beliefs. This is carried out through assemblies, Religious Education, PSHE and welcoming visitors into our school. All year groups, enjoy themed learning which provides many opportunities to further understandings of different cultures. Across the year, we celebrate and learn about different specials days and festivals that are celebrated across the world.

“It is importance to not define anyone by colour, religion or anything that can leave anyone out,” Year 6 pupil.

Ramadan Club

March 2024

We run a club for all our children participating in fasting during Ramadan. Attendance this year is the most it's ever been.

The children are really enjoying the experience.
